BIDR
Balanced Inventory of Desirable Responding (BIDR)
The BIDR is a 40-item self-report questionnaire designed to measure social desirability bias in responses. It explores two complementary components: the tendency to perceive oneself in an exaggeratedly positive way without being fully aware of it, and the tendency to deliberately present oneself in a favorable light. This tool is mainly used in personality assessment, in research, and in clinical, forensic, academic or selection settings, in order to interpret the results of other self-report questionnaires with greater caution. The BIDR does not make a diagnosis on its own, but it helps detect a possible distortion of responses and distinguish what stems more from honestly believed self-enhancement or from impression management.

Scoring & interpretation
The questionnaire comprises two 20-item subscales: self-deceptive enhancement and impression management. Standard scoring consists of reversing the items worded in the opposite direction, then assigning 1 point to extreme socially desirable responses, generally 6 or 7 after reversal if necessary, and 0 to all other responses. Each subscale yields a score from 0 to 20, and a total score from 0 to 40 can be calculated. High scores suggest a response style more strongly influenced by social desirability. Continuous scoring, based on the original response values, can also be used in some research protocols.
