Diagnostic Autism Spectrum Interview (DASI-2)

The DASI-2 is a semi-structured clinical interview designed to support the diagnostic assessment of autism spectrum disorder in individuals over 2 years of age. It is intended for psychologists and other clinicians and is directly aligned with DSM-5 and ICD-11 criteria. The tool systematically explores developmental history, social communication, restricted and repetitive behaviors, functional impact, the presence of symptoms across multiple settings, and compensatory strategies such as masking. It also includes prompts about possible comorbidities and can be supplemented by a structured observation record covering communication, emotional understanding, social understanding, imagination, and general presentation.

Scoring & interpretation

Scoring is done by the clinician. Each symptom category is judged on the basis of the answers and examples given during the interview. A category is met if at least one corresponding element is rated as present, or as partially present with significant impact and/or compensation. To conclude ASD according to the DSM-5-TR-based algorithm, all 3 social communication and social interaction categories must be met, as well as at least 2 of the 4 restricted and repetitive behavior categories. It is also necessary to confirm that the manifestations are present across multiple settings, that they date back to the developmental period, and that their impact is clinically significant, and to check that they are not better explained by global developmental delay. The clinician then specifies the level of support required. The observation record, when used, supplements the interpretation qualitatively.
