Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP-32)

The IIP-32 is designed to identify and quantify clinically relevant relational difficulties in adults. It explores distress related to interpersonal functioning across 8 domains of the circumplex model, such as control, coldness, social inhibition, lack of assertiveness, or overaccommodation. In clinical practice, it helps objectify the patient's relational profile, guide the functional analysis, monitor progress in psychotherapy, and document changes over the course of treatment. Its brevity makes it particularly useful in consultations, initial assessments, and repeated follow-ups.

Scoring & interpretation

Each item is rated on a scale from 0 to 4, ranging from "Not at all" to "Extremely". The total score is obtained by summing or averaging the 32 items and reflects the overall level of interpersonal distress. The 8 subscales each contain 4 items and describe specific relational styles or difficulties. Higher scores indicate more interpersonal problems in the domain concerned. Interpretation should consider both the total score and the subscale profile, with reference to the norms of the version used; the tool alone does not constitute a diagnosis.
